The Commons is a weblog for concerned citizens of southeast Iowa and their friends around the world. It was created to encourage grassroots networking and to share information and ideas which have either been suppressed or drowned out in the mainstream media.

"But if the cause be not good, the king himself hath a heavy reckoning to make, when all those legs and arms and heads, chopped off in battle, shall join together at the latter day and cry all 'We died at such a place;' some swearing, some crying for a surgeon, some upon their wives left poor behind them, some upon the debts they owe, some upon their children rawly left. I am afeard there are few die well that die in a battle; for how can they charitably dispose of any thing, when blood is their argument? Now, if these men do not die well, it will be a black matter for the king that led them to it; whom to disobey were against all proportion of subjection." (Henry V, Act V, Scene 4)

Darfur on the Mississippi: The Republican Armageddon

Darfur on the Mississippi: The Republican Armageddon

As I watch the situation in New Orleans and the surrounding area descend into hell on earth, I can't help but note how utterly and completely this disaster refutes the policies and vision of society that has ruled the Republican party and the US for the past decade.

This is Darfur and the Dustbowl and the San Francisco Fire and the storming of the Bastille all rolled into one, and it will force the citizens of the US to wake up to the insanity of GOP policies.

The role of government: The GOP gospel of low-taxes, low services, let the rich hide behind gated communities maintained by private security, etc. is blown to bits.

The concerns over the environment: Overdevelopment, loss of wetlands, global warming, etc. These issues can NEVER be allowed to be laughed at again.

Crumbling infrastructure. The role of levees, and bridges and highways and other things can never be allowed to become invisible again.

The Iraq disaster. The national guard used as a private army for a foreign boondoggle. They aren't here to do what they were created to do---nor is much of their equipment.

Disenfranchisement of poor people, especially poor black people. The anger we are hearing from the victims of this disaster is already completely POLITICAL. They've been shut out of the process and they know this had led directly to their being sacrificed to the disaster.

The petrochemical industry. Both our dependence on it and its danger to our health. Every time Bill O'Reilly goes after "big oil" we need to scream about who "big oil" supported for President and Congress, where their lobbying money goes and what concrete policies have resulted.

US healthcare system. Overwhelmed, underfunded, unable to cope.

Banking, insurance, etc. The unfairness of the new bankruptcy legislation will be revealed when tens of thousands of people will default on car loans, mortgages, etc.

Gun Control. The widespread and easy availabiliy of guns from Walmart and sporting goods stores now has to be seen as a threat to national security. They had to stop the evacuation because shots are being fired at Army helicopters, for christ's sake!

Capital over people. Officials on the ground have now officially chosen property over people by taking police off search-and-resuce missions to go after looters.

The utter joke that is "Homeland Security". All that money, all that propaganda, all the efforts to curtail our civil liberties in the name of homeland security and THIS is how the system responds to an "attack" on a major American city??

And perhaps most of all: BUSH HIMSELF. His cowardice, laziness, utter, pathological lack of empathy. His refusal to face reality. His golfing and playing guitar and comparing himself to Roosevelt during a photo-op as the disaster unfolded. His canned, peeved-sounding responses. His utter lack of interest in a situation that is not part of the hustle. And that horrible, hollow rhetoric about how everything's going to be OK delivered with that nauseating, utterly inappropriate SMIRK!
