"But if the cause be not good, the king himself hath a heavy reckoning to make, when all those legs and arms and heads, chopped off in battle, shall join together at the latter day and cry all 'We died at such a place;' some swearing, some crying for a surgeon, some upon their wives left poor behind them, some upon the debts they owe, some upon their children rawly left. I am afeard there are few die well that die in a battle; for how can they charitably dispose of any thing, when blood is their argument? Now, if these men do not die well, it will be a black matter for the king that led them to it; whom to disobey were against all proportion of subjection." (Henry V, Act V, Scene 4)

Our Conscience

I don't know about "religious socialists." Christian socialists have a short history in this country with the progressive movement and they still have some in the U.K. This is something I'll have to check on because I haven't heard it before.

It's A Wonderful Life

I was watching the annual re-run of It's A Wonderful Life (I watch it every year) and it struck me--that movie has it all in a nutshell. Pottersville is just around the corner. You see the seedy side of Pottersville and Potter's shanty town. Heck, that's the point-everything is named Pottersomething. He won't stop until he owns everything and everyone owes him.

It's Bailey who tells it like it is everytime. It takes working stiffs a life-time to save up enough to buy anything decent. He tells them we have to stick together and help each other out and not to forget what lies down the road if we don't. In the end Clarence tells him a man can never be poor as long as he has friends. So thanks everyone for being a friend and we'll get through this by sticking together. Hope everyone had a Happy Holiday celebration!
